Interior:
Inside the Vale estate, elegance isn’t a style—it’s a rule. Every room is curated, controlled, and camera-ready, like something lifted from the glossy pages of Architectural Digest. Soft neutrals and gilded accents stretch across soaring ceilings, with sunlight catching on crystal chandeliers and polished surfaces. The marble floors echo footsteps like whispers, and the scent of designer candles blends with fresh-cut orchids delivered weekly—even if no one’s home to notice.

The grand staircase winds like a ribbon of power through the two-story foyer, and the formal sitting room—draped in blush velvet and gold—feels more like a museum than a place to relax. It’s the kind of house where nothing is out of place, because no one’s around long enough to make a mess.

Victor and Adeline Vale are rarely home. Business trips. Galas. Board meetings. Always somewhere else. Which means the estate, for all its perfection, often belongs to Seraphina alone.

So it’s become a thing: the place for afterparties and secret celebrations. Whether it’s post-formal champagne in crystal flutes or late-night swims in the backyard infinity pool, Sera’s house is the backdrop to some of Evergreen’s most legendary nights. Everyone knows there’s no adult supervision—just golden light spilling through tall windows and music echoing down marbled halls.

But even then, the mansion never quite feels warm. It’s beautiful in the way a stage set is beautiful—flawless, silent, waiting. For Sera, the house is a symbol of everything expected of her: control, poise, perfection. Behind closed doors, she sometimes wonders what it would be like if it ever truly felt like home.

The room was suffused with the warm, comforting scents of vanilla candles mingling with the crisp aroma of fresh laundry. Light streamed through the window, illuminating a space that felt both cozy and lived-in. Sera’s bed, usually a picture of neatness, was a disheveled canvas of tangled blankets and fluffy pillows, a rare sight that hinted at a lazy afternoon. Soft indie melodies floated gently through the speakers, barely rising above the rhythmic ticking of the clock on the wall, which marked time in a whispering cadence.

Sera lay sprawled on her stomach across the bed, her legs playfully kicking in the air like a carefree child. In one hand, she clutched a vibrant purple gel pen, and in the other, a spiral notebook filled with half-formed thoughts and dreams. Beside her, Asher sat cross-legged, his presence calm and relaxed, as he absentmindedly rolled a lacrosse ball in his palm. His letterman jacket, a symbol of school pride, hung casually over the back of her desk chair, a reminder of the world outside their little bubble.

At the top of the page, in Sera’s loopy handwriting, it read:

Things We Have to Do Before Graduation
(No skipping, no excuses)

Below it, a growing list:
  • Ice cream from Wren’s
  • Stargazing at Three Pines
  • Go back to the diner booth where we first kissed
  • Sneak into the school auditorium and slow dance on stage
  • Say “I love you” at the top of Lookout Point
  • Last day of school breakfast at my place—pancakes & strawberries
  • Watch La La Land and actually make it to the end this time
  • Write letters to open in five years
  • One full day: no phones, no distractions, just us

Sera turned her head slowly, her cheek softly resting on her folded arm, the delicate curve of her face illuminated by the soft light in the room. She gazed at him with warm, inviting eyes, curiosity dancing across her features. “Is there anything else you’d like to add?” she asked, her voice gentle and laced with genuine interest.

Asher remained silent, his thoughts suspended in the stillness that enveloped them.

The question hung in the air, a palpable presence that lingered like the afternoon light filtering through the window, casting a warm glow across their faces. His gaze fell upon the meticulously crafted list, the purple ink dancing in graceful loops and swirls that only Sera could muster. Each bullet point was more than mere words; it was a vivid snapshot of their shared journey, a tangible tether connecting who they were to what they hoped to preserve. It served as a blueprint for their memories, a silent vow to safeguard the fleeting moments that might otherwise slip away unnoticed.

He exhaled slowly, the breath escaping his lips like a sigh of contemplation, while the lacrosse ball lay motionless in his grasp, a testament to his internal struggle.

He could have filled the silence with humour, with light-hearted banter that would scatter the moment's heaviness. A quip about crashing the prom or facetiously skipping the senior awards assembly would have been easy—a distraction that wouldn’t tether his heart in uncertainty.

But as his eyes shifted toward her, he found himself captivated by the soft way the sunlight kissed her skin, the gentle glow enhancing her features. She looked at him with an earnestness that suggested their connection was anything but trivial. In that gaze, something profound awakened within him—delicate yet unmistakably real.

Leaning forward ever so slightly, he allowed his voice to fall to a whisper, each word infused with the weight of his sincerity. “Promise we won’t forget who we are right now.”

There wasn’t a grand crescendo of music or an exaggerated proclamation; it was simply a shared truth, quiet and raw. Asher felt the gravity of his words resonate in the space between them. He didn’t know where life would lead them in five years or how the world would transform after graduation. All he knew was that this moment—their sanctuary of flickering candlelight, ink-stained aspirations, and the comforting scent of freshly laundered sheets—deserved to be etched in their hearts forever.

He watched intently as Sera took her pen and began writing. There were no elaborate phrases, just the soft scratch of the pen against the paper, creating a rhythm that mirrored the beating of his heart. In that fleeting instant, he dared to believe that perhaps, just perhaps, this moment would linger, suspended in time, cherished and unforgotten.

Sera didn’t speak right away.

She simply looked at him—really looked at him—the way you do when you’re trying to memorize someone, as if staring hard enough might hold them in place. Her pen hovered for a beat, then touched the page in one fluid motion.

– Don’t forget who we are right now.

She capped the pen with a soft click and set it down beside the notebook. Her fingers lingered there for a moment, tracing the edge of the page before she turned toward him.

“I won’t,” she said, voice barely louder than the whisper he’d offered her. “Even if everything changes… I’ll remember this version of us.”

Her lips curled into something fragile and real—not a posed smile, not a perfect one, but the kind that only someone like Asher got to see. The kind that didn’t need an audience.

“We’re more than just a list,” she added, her tone gentle but firm, as if convincing herself as much as him. “But I think… I needed to see it. I needed proof that it’s all been real.”

She shifted closer, just enough for their shoulders to brush. The notebook lay open between them, each line now a quiet promise wrapped in ink and teenage hope.

Her gaze flicked back to the list, then to him—eyes softer now, glassy with something unspoken. She didn’t need to say “I love you.” Not this time. It was there already, tucked into the way she leaned into the silence with him, the way her fingers found his without thinking, knotting gently between his.

Outside, the wind stirred the trees. Inside, time slowed just enough for them to pretend the world wasn’t changing.

Asher tilted his head slightly, his gaze fixed intently on her—not merely focused on her words but captivated by how she expressed them. There was a delicate hesitation in the way her fingers danced over the page as if she feared that releasing her grip would cause the entire moment to shatter into a million fragments. This version of Sera, so barefaced and unguarded, curled up amidst the unkempt chaos of her bed, tugged at something deep within him, unravelling his composure just a bit. Not that he’d ever concede that aloud—not in those precise words.

He allowed her to finish her thoughts, letting the silence linger like an unspoken promise. Then, a playful smirk crept across his lips, slow and familiar, lighting up his features.

“You know,” he began, his voice dropping to a low, teasing cadence infused with a hint of cockiness, “when you say things like that, you have to expect me to fall even harder. It’s just irresponsible of you.”

He nudged her knee gently with his own, a playful gesture that elicited an eye roll from her—a sound he could almost hear in the air—but he didn’t release her hand, maintaining that warm connection.

His gaze drifted down to the notebook, absorbed momentarily by the ink-filled pages before returning to her face—the real one—not the carefully curated version she presented to the outside world. Here, in this intimate space, she was wholly herself.

“I think we sometimes forget,” he said, his tone casual but carrying an underlying sincerity, “just how rare this is. This bond. To truly understand that it matters.”

He shrugged lightly as if deflecting the weight of his own words, hiding the significance beneath a layer of charm. It was his usual way of easing into profundity, letting the truth slip in sideways.

“But just so we’re clear,” he added, his thumb brushing over hers in a lingering caress, “if you ever do lose sight of that… I’ll be here to remind you. Dramatically, of course. Probably with flowers or some extravagant public display. Gotta keep things on-brand, right?”

He glanced at her, mischief dancing in his eyes, before leaning in closer, their foreheads nearly touching—a moment electric with possibility.

“Not going anywhere, Vale. Not unless you make me.”

Sera let out a soft laugh—sharp around the edges, the kind she used when she didn’t quite trust herself to speak plainly. “You always did have a flair for the dramatic,” she said, eyes flicking back down to the notebook in her lap. Her pen twirled between her fingers, a nervous habit disguised as nonchalance.

She didn’t look at him right away. Instead, she traced the last bullet point with the tip of her pen, her gaze lingering there like it might distract her from everything pressing at the edges of the moment.

“You make it sound so simple,” she said after a pause, her tone light but not unkind. “Like just wanting it badly enough makes it all work out.”

She finally looked at him then, her expression carefully composed—shoulders back, chin lifted just enough to look confident, but her eyes couldn’t quite hide the flicker of doubt behind them.

“We’re going to be on opposite coasts, Ash,” she continued, still measured. “Stanford and Harvard aren’t exactly a weekend trip.” The words were matter-of-fact, but they landed heavier than she intended. She shifted slightly, tucking one leg beneath her as if grounding herself.

It would’ve been easy to let it all spill out—to confess how often she’d imagined them slowly fading, how much it terrified her to start over in a place where no one knew her, where she couldn’t count on his steady presence. But that wasn’t her style. Not unless she was certain it was safe.

So instead, she offered him a tight, practiced smile—the kind she gave at dinner parties and award ceremonies. “But hey. If anyone could keep things interesting across time zones, it’s you.”

She nudged him lightly with her shoulder, then added, more quietly, “Just… don’t forget the version of us sitting here right now, okay?”

It was as close as she could come to admitting she was scared. To asking him not to let her be the one to break what they had—even if, deep down, she wasn’t sure whether preserving it would hurt less than letting it go.

Asher let the silence hang between them, stretching it out for a beat, then two—long enough for the unspoken truths swirling in the air to settle heavily in the space around them. He could feel that unvoiced rush of emotions behind Sera's laughter, a sharp sound in its edges, layered with meaning. Though practised and polished, her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes, which danced with a flicker of something deeper—an unease she couldn’t quite conceal. Her fingers fidgeted constantly as if motion could ward off the weight of stillness and the vulnerability it brought. Asher recognised her tells, each one mapped in his mind more intricately than he probably should have allowed.

Leaning back on his hands, he glanced up at the ceiling, where the glow-in-the-dark stars she had affixed years ago twinkled faintly in the dimness as if the answers he sought might somehow be hidden among them.

“You think I don’t know that?” he said, his tone devoid of defensiveness, simply honest and steady. “You think I haven’t counted the costs? The flights, the time zones that twist the day into nights, the weekends likely consumed by the chaos of midterms, internships, or—life just happening?”

He turned to her then, his gaze piercing through her facade. He wasn’t looking at the polished version she presented to the world but at the essence of Sera—the girl who had crept into his heart long before either of them grasped the paths they were forging into adulthood.

“I know it won’t be easy,” he continued, his voice dropping to a softer register, yet his conviction remained unwavering. “But you’re not just a fleeting moment, Sera, something I can lock away in a box and bring out on breaks. You’re the compass that grounds me and makes everything else come together.”

His voice, though gentle, carried the weight of his sincerity. “So, maybe I’m being a little dramatic. It wouldn’t be the first time. But when I say I want this to work, I mean us—together. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s you.”

With a slow, deliberate movement, he reached out, gently intertwining his pinky with hers—not demanding, just providing an anchor amidst the tumult of their conversation.

“And for the record,” he added, flashing a crooked smile that momentarily lit up his face, “I could never forget this version of us sitting here right now. You’re unforgettable, you know?”

A pause followed, his grin fading just enough for the underlying truth to seep through, raw and unguarded.

“I’m scared too, Sera,” he confessed, the vulnerability in his voice palpable. “But I’d choose to be scared of you over being certain about anyone else.”

Sera's gaze dropped to their intertwined pinkies, a delicate intertwining that seemed to symbolize an unspoken truce neither of them dared to name. The warmth of the moment flickered, and she looked up at Cole, her eyebrows arching ever so slightly, signaling her retreat into familiar territory—witty, composed, and emotionally impervious, as if she was coated in Teflon.

“Well, damn, Cole,” she said, her voice lilting with a teasing edge, “are you trying to propose to me, or is this some clever form of emotional blackmail to keep me in love with you?”

A smirk danced on her lips as the sarcasm poured from her, landing like confetti on an otherwise tense and solemn moment. “Because I swear, if I end up crying over this, just know I’ll be blaming you for it.”

She leaned over, grabbing a nearby pillow and hugging it loosely against her chest, her fingers absently toying with the fringe of the soft fabric. Her tone might have been lighthearted, but her eyes darted over his face too quickly, as if she were afraid to reveal too much of the swirling emotions beneath her carefully crafted façade.

“Look, I get it. You’re all in. You always are with everything you do. It’s one of those traits of yours that can be exhausting, but somehow also oddly endearing.” A playful twitch tugged at her lips, suggesting a smile that didn’t fully form. “But, honestly, I’m not exactly known for facing change with grace. I mean, I literally cried for an entire week when Starbucks decided to discontinue my favorite seasonal drink.”

Her voice trailed off, leaving a silence that stretched between them—not tense, but rather tentative, a fragile pause pregnant with unspoken thoughts.

“And let’s be real—Stanford is a long way from Evergreen. Far from you. Far from—well, from all of this.” She gestured vaguely around the room, as if encompassing their shared memories and moments within her sweeping motion. “I guess I’m just trying to be realistic here without coming off as a total coward.”

Another shrug followed, this one heavier than it initially appeared, laden with an unseen weight. Her voice dipped slightly, still teasing but now infused with an unmistakable undertone of sincerity that lingered in the air.

“Anyway, if I do start spiraling into the depths of despair, I’ll need you to send me some over-the-top dramatic text messages from Boston. Maybe throw together a care package. Something that’s obnoxiously cheerful. Perhaps even glitter. You know, just to keep it fun.”

She locked eyes with him then—really locked eyes, letting the mischief that usually sparkled there soften as reality set in.

“I don’t want to lose what we have either, Ash. It terrifies me, honestly. But I just don’t know if wanting it badly enough is enough to make it work in the end.”

A beat passed, the weight of unspoken fears hanging in the air. Then, in her classic Sera fashion, she broke the tension with a dry quip. “But hey, at least if we crash and burn, we’ll look really good doing it.”

Asher allowed her words to hang in the air, a thick tension settling between them. He resisted the urge to fill the silence, something he usually did effortlessly, but tonight was different. His thumb brushed gently over her pinky, the only part of his body that moved. At the same time, the rest of him remained still—his gaze locked on her with an intoxicating mix of patience and intensity that always sent a shiver down her spine, more unsettling than any of his typical charm.

He waited, letting her finish speaking, allowing each quip to fade, watching as her smile dimmed just a moment too quickly for comfort.

Then he leaned in.

This wasn’t his usual swagger, the confident troublemaker he often played. Instead, there was a steadiness to his approach, a deliberate closeness that seemed to challenge her to look away. But she didn’t; she was captivated by how he drew near.

"You think I’d go through all this trouble," he murmured, his voice low and husky, "just to keep you in love with me?"

A sharp, knowing smirk graced his lips, playful yet intense. "Sera, I never had to try. You were already gone for me before you even realised it."

Before she could retort, he gently pried the pillow from her grasp and tossed it aside, his actions smooth and confident. He cradled her jaw with one hand, his thumb brushing softly against her cheek, sending warmth radiating through her skin.

“I know it’s complicated. I’m not pretending otherwise.” His voice dropped further, coated in a rich mix of velvet and gravel. “But don’t use sarcasm and Starbucks metaphors to hide the fact that you’re scared I’ll forget you out there.”

He inched closer, his forehead nearly touching hers, the intensity of his gaze locking them in a cocoon of intimacy.

“You’re right, Vale. Stanford’s a long way off. Everything is shifting around us. There’s a chance we’ll crash and burn in this whirlwind of change. But if it means fighting for something that matters—something across time zones and through every doubt you throw at me... I’d choose this—us—every damn time.”

He pulled back just enough to read the emotions dancing across her face, their eyes still intertwined in a silent conversation.

“So go to Stanford. Conquer the world. Wear those power blazers that scream confidence and intimidate the hell out of your professors. But don’t for a second think I’m going anywhere.”

He winked, slipping back into his cocky persona, but there was an underlying softness that transformed the gesture into something more genuine—a promise.

“And hey,” he added with a playful glint, “I’ll make sure the glitter in your care packages is the kind that sticks around for ages. Just so you can’t forget about me, no matter where you are.”

His fingers interlaced with hers, tightening their grip, solidifying the unspoken vow beneath the humour, the fear, and the inevitable distance.

They might not know what lay ahead.

But in that moment, Asher Cole made it abundantly clear—he wasn’t letting her go without a fight.

Sera arched a perfectly sculpted brow, her smirk cutting through the tension like a switchblade. “Okay, Cole,” she drawled, tilting her head slightly, “that was... impressive. Very swoony. Ten out of ten delivery. You should consider majoring in heartfelt declarations with a minor in dramatic timing.”

She tugged her hand away just far enough to cross her arms but left her pinky hooked in his—an act of rebellion wrapped in affection, because of course it was.

“Let me get this straight,” she continued, her voice laced with dry amusement. “You’re out here tossing around phrases like ‘fighting across time zones’ like you’re starring in a Netflix original, while I’m the one trying to keep us tethered to, I don’t know, reality?”

She didn’t let him answer. Instead, she gestured vaguely toward the space between them, where all their unspoken fears sat like unwelcome guests. “You talk like we’re inevitable. Like glitter bombs and power blazers and dramatic foreheads-touching monologues are enough to override the fact that you’re going to Harvard, and I’m going to Stanford, and we’re both going to be so far up our own future plans that we won’t even have time to miss each other.”

A beat passed. She shrugged, her expression unreadable. “Or maybe you will. You’ve always had a flair for sentiment. Meanwhile, I’ll be buried under syllabi and wondering if I should've broken up with you at the end of August like a normal overachiever.”

It was a hit. She knew it. She could feel it land.

But she didn’t apologize.

Instead, she looked him dead in the eye, her smirk returning with a razor’s edge. “And if you do send me glitter, I swear to God, I will FedEx it back in a box labeled emotional blackmail.”

Still, her voice wavered at the edges, the smallest crack forming in the foundation of her sarcasm. And maybe he caught it, or maybe he didn’t—but she hated how part of her hoped he did.

“So yeah,” she finished, her tone finally softening, barely. “Make your promises. Fight the good fight. Just… don’t ask me to pretend it doesn’t scare the hell out of me too.”

Then, quieter, as she looked away: “You’re not the only one who doesn’t want to lose what this is. But I’m not going to let pretty words be the reason we ignore the truth.”

Her eyes flicked back to his. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to need, like, four iced lattes to emotionally process this conversation. Maybe five.”
